So What IS YourStyle? It’s a place for women on Sonsi to showcase their real style.
Each month Sonsi will feature one of YOU in our YourStyle article, highlighting some of your favorites in Fashion, Life and Home. This lucky lady will not only be featured on SonsiLiving but also get to showcase their very own, hand-picked clothing collection on Sonsi … Shop Deb’s YourStyle Collection here!
Tell us about Deb, in your own words:
I am a DIY fatshionista, having landed in plus size fashion, almost accidentally, 12 years ago and have never looked back. My personal passion and drive is to search the fashion nooks & crannies for affordable fashions that fit and help women feel great, and also to support independent plus size designers. My goal with Re/Dress online is to empower the plus size woman to see fashion and style as an accessible tool communicating their personality, for accessing their inner and outer beauty and to support a world where people are not judged by their size.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is seeing my customers smiling while wearing their Re/Dress finds. Just the other day I went to a wedding shower and the hostess was wearing the Sex Kitten Dress in Olive and she looked so darling, sassy and confident. It put a smile on both our faces. My second favorite part is hunting down the awesome plus size fashions I have the privilege to share with my customers.
Tell us about the best vacation you’ve ever been on…
Any vacation that involves scuba diving! I’ve been to Hawaii and Fiji and they’re both extraordinary. I love the freedom that being weightless under the water gives me, it’s like flying through the mysteries of the universe. It’s a very size friendly sport! If you like to swim you’ll love diving!
What is your go-to outfit for running out the door?
My fave running around outfit is any dress long or short that I can pair with teggings. Teggings are more comfortable than pajamas. I often will slip on a short dress or tunic length top like our Fade to Pink Wrap Dress for daytime and then I swap it out for the Sweet Tea Lace Dress for dinner, keeping the teggings on all day. I never have to worry about a dress being too short and feeling uncomfortable to show my legs.
What is your favorite summer to fall trend?
I love love love cardigans. In the summer there’s always the issue with random air conditioning. With a cute cardigan I never have to worry about being too cold. And then for fall they’re a must have for making that favorite spring/summer dress stretch another season.
What do you love about vintage style?
There’s so much opportunity with vintage styling to really hone your signature look, are you a flower child from the 70′s, a pin up bombshell from the 50′s or a power diva from the 80′s? There’s so much iconic inspiration to draw from to really be able to community who you are. I have a passion for the rich saturated prints of the late 60′s and early 70′s.
What is the best book you’ve ever read?
My all time favorite book is When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chödrön. It’s not an upbeat title but reading it changed my life during a time of upheaval and grief. It was one of those books that felt like home, like I had known those words and concepts existed in the world, but I just hadn’t encountered them yet. It gave me the foundation for my daily meditation practice and my spiritual path.
What advice would you give to your 16 year old self?
I’d say Deb, get off that scale and get into your life. You love to dance and go horseback riding, you want to learn fencing, stage combat, and so many things. Do them! Life is too short to worry about the number on the scale or the size on your jeans.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
I believe my greatest accomplishment is creating a space in which I gave plus size people permission to be playful with fashion and dance outside their comfort zone.
