2013: The Book of Opportunity

Edith Lovejoy Pierce once said “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.” How great to have another year of opportunity ahead of us! 2013 is a fresh start to better ourselves and unleash a positive attitude – a time for hope and excitement.

Will this be the year you land your dream job? Will you find a class at the gym you love attending? Will you splurge on that fantasy vacation you’ve always wanted to take? There’s so much out there waiting for us, and the best part is that we have the power to make it happen!

Granted, there will always be a stigma when it comes to making New Year resolutions. Statistically speaking, no one ever fully accomplishes everything they set out to do, but this year I vow to not let those negative thoughts stop me. I challenge myself to reevaluate my life and change what I feel needs to be changed. To set priorities and make lifestyle changes to better myself physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. This year instead of resolutions I’m treating them as opportunities, opportunities for introspection and self-evaluation. It’s time to stop making excuses and start taking risks.

Who knows what a little positive thinking and motivation can do for our lives? Maybe it’s the piece of the puzzle that’s been missing – a little self-confidence and optimism. After all, filling our minds with self-doubt is toxic. I unfortunately know all too well about this destructive behavior. I criticize myself regularly and on top of that I care entirely too much on what others might think or say. I know first-hand how insecurities can paralyze your spirit, but I’m finally learning to break free of those barriers.

Late last year I had a break-through as a blogger.  I realized the more I put myself out there (no matter how terrifying it seemed at first) the more I got out of it. That meant putting my insecurities out on display whether it be through my writing, my pictures, or my videos. The more risks I took, the more benefits I reaped, and the more opportunities started coming way. I learned an important lesson about not letting fear stop you from pursuing what you want to do.

At times it’s nice to be reminded that you have the power to make your own destiny.  You choose what opportunities to create.  You choose what chances to take. So as we move forward this year, let’s remember we have the ability to change, achieve, and accomplish anything and we set our minds to. The time is now friends.

What will you write in your book this year?
